    Considering New Monaco

Post by Gary Levy on Mon Mar 28, 2011 4:05 pm

Hi all, with the release of Hungaroring we now have a pretty good set of F1 tracks for the 2011 season.I'm now trying to decide which project to take on next and am considering updating Monaco. It seems to me the one we already have is :-

    a) Way too bouncy

    b) Extremely out of date

My primary aim would be to produce a nice smooth track. With some updated eye candy as a bonus.
I have a nice version, partially converted which I could use. What I'd like to know is, do people think this would be a worthwhile project? Or are you happy with the version we already have.
Please let me know what you think.

    Cheers Smile

the current monaco is very average. i think it needs updating like silverstone. its very "meh" to me and deffinitely needs a makeover. check the real monaco sector 1 and the one we already have - it can be improved quite a bit. the pits could also do with some work too.

id say start with monaco then update silverstone to the 2011 track. i think these are the only 2 which are "falling behind" compared to the rest of the tracks which are being released

if you can convert from codemasters go for it. otherwise all other monacos are based on gp4 monaco so not worth it

I can't run the current Monaco due to poor FPS so would like a new one (assuming it runs better) Smile

Interesting, I don't think I would consider a Codies track for conversion because of the way CM construct their tracks i.e all wall objects are separate "modules" with interior faces. F1 2010 suffers from poor FPS and I'm sure this is one of the reasons. The engine is constantly drawing faces that are never seen.

At the same time I can't really see any problem converting one of the existing rFactor versions, why would it be not worth it? As far as I can see the version we already have is fine, just too bumpy, all I want to do is smooth it out and update the textures.

Regarding FPS I just did some tests and was surprised how poorly the current Monaco runs. I was only able to get around 120 frames on my rig. I then compared this to the new version I am converting and got a steady 220-230, so hopefully a new version will be useable by all.

smooth it out? if you mean bumps i dont think it should be smoothed, its monaco and street circuits have bumps, bumps are important, cause having a flat tracks is boring

I completely agree Albert. Boring is not a word I would normally ascociate with the Monaco circuit however.I'm not talking about glass smooth,(that could never be achieved anyway),if you look at this video :-
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=monaco+onboard&aq=f

you can see there are some small bumps, but generally the camera stays pretty steady. Now go and do a lap in the KS2 at netkar Monaco and I think you'll agree it's way too bumpy. You can't get any decent temperatures in the tyres and some of the corners are a joke.

tbh i think the current monaco is poor as it doesnt correspond that well to the real track. if you look at the real-life videos and the one were currently running the only thing it has similar is the track layout which is very poor anyway. i think it needs a huge update and more time / effort put into it as its a classic track and will have a LOT of downloads.

when i drive there i feel as though it was a rushed job. everything doesnt seem to be in proportion. the road surface is dodgy, the textures need updating and the pits are pretty much useless in a sense of being realistic. the barriers / walls need taking out too at the chicane.

i hope theres a new version which can be converted because i think itd be pretty much a waste of time updating the one we already have. i dont know who did it origionally but thats how i feel anyway. its the same with silverstone.

    what options are there?

Unfortunately the options seem a bit limited,as Albert correctly stated all rfactor versions (including the one already in netkar) are based on the same track. This is a video of the version I'm thinking of working on :-

    http://wn.com/|rFactor|_F1_Monaco_2010__A_lap_with_Robert_Kubica

    It's either that or

    a) make one from scratch (tons of work)

b)try Codies version (probably tons of work)

As it is I'm already looking at having to virtually re-build parts of the track surface to get them anywhere near smooth enough for netkar. I would love to hear if anyone has any suggestions.
Netkar deserves a decent Monaco! Very Happy
