1 Dec 2011: Interlagos - Fri Dec 02, 2011 5:25 pm

I wasn't sure I would do the race - having done only a few laps before
the day (my practice time was hijacked by Imola). However half an hour
on track persuaded me I wouldn't be dangerous, although I did expect to
be horribly lapped.

Qualifying saw me improve my PB to 1:16.05, which was only good enough
for 11th but given my lack of track time probably the best place to be
(for everyone elses sake!). I made a cautious start just trying to keep
ahead of Jose Canseco who was being even more cautious than me.
Somewhere early on I think Biggio went off and M Waechter dropped back
behind Matt Dawson. MW was apparently running wings of 5/1. I was
catching him on the twisty bits and struggling to keep up on the
straights. I was happy to run close behind and try and put the pressure
on - which seemed to pay off on Lap 8 he went too deep into T1 and I
nipped up the inside - managing to just stay ahead into the twisties
where the better down force paid off. I could see I was very slowly
catching Matt Dawson and 5 laps later I was on his tail adopting the
same strategy - put the pressure on. We raced nose to tail up to lap 25
when he made a mistake, I think in T13 and I passed him and planned to
pit that lap. My lack of practice meant I had no idea where the speed
limited line was so I went very slowly up the long pit road, throwing
away my advantage. Matt passed me just as I pulled into my box and as I
exited he managed to just pull out ahead of me. Back to piling on the
pressure from behind. Somewhere Clive caught up with us and knowing he
was a lot faster I decided to let him pass and let him hassle Matt. That
didn't work so well as I kind of lost my rhythm, fell back a bit and
had to really work hard to catch up again with Matt. I was fairly
confident I could catch him and put a pass - he was often deep into T1
so I set about planning my move. It wasn't to be, on lap 45 I was
distracted and clipped the wall on on the start damaging my suspension
finishing 8th.

Sounds almost a bit dull - chasing someone for the best part of 40 laps
but it was a fantastic experience. Matt was well matched with my race
times and rock solid - with only one mistake. Matt - I salute you, you
deserved the place.

Is there a problem with the Interlagos circuit download? I downloaded and installed in tracks but it crashes when I select the track or try and join the server.

17 Nov 2011: Bahrain - Wed Nov 16, 2011 9:44 pm

Guilt. So much guilt.

A 'lifestyle' change (I've given up smoking (2.5 weeks and counting) after 30 years) has seen me spending much less time in front of the computer (where I tended to ... smoke ... lots). I've taken a huge hit on practice time and have only done a couple of laps at Bahrain. I thought I'd get a good couple of hours in tonight but have spent the day dragging gliders round a field and am completely ****ing knackered. Apologies - to all but especially Juan as I'm extremely unlikely to be racing tomorrow.

Points Distribution and Prequalification - Tue Oct 18, 2011 7:49 pm

I quite like the idea of pre-qual but I think it potentially misses an important aspect. I'm not the fastest driver around but I'll often pass faster guys as they overcook it into a turn. Being able to turn in a fast hot lap isn't necessarily a sign of a driver who can run a decent pace for 40 laps. I'd suggest pre-qual was based on the times over 5-10 lap races/runs but that might be difficult/complex to implement or unfair on folks if they can't find a race in the run up. Ho hum ...

Points Distribution and Prequalification - Tue Oct 18, 2011 6:15 pm

I think the points work quite well for moving people between the groups. However, it seems a shame when the number of participants leave just a few drivers in group B. My suggestion would be that if there are less than (n - I'd suggest 5) drivers in group B, drivers from group A are either encouraged to, or moved to group B to even up the numbers. The carrot for them is the possibility of a better result and more points. Obviously that leaves fewer drivers in Group A but on long races you are often driving lap after lap without sight of another driver so the experience would be much the same apart from the start. If that was the case then I'd suggest that the points difference between the groups was made even smaller.

Err, did you send to Piers Structures or Piers C Structures? I had an account mixup when I joined hence having two. Now I can't see how to logout of this to check the other one!

I may be able to help out with some simple PHP but time wise I'm not able to commit to writing reams of code.

13 Oct 2011: Suzuka - Fri Oct 14, 2011 5:05 pm

Andrea, you had contact with me around lap2. I'd just overtaken you on the inside into turn 1, I was on the the inside line into turn 2 and had a little moment just as you came alongside me. Our wheels hit and you took the worst of it (being on the outside you checked my wiggle but then you had some extra momentum to deal with and went wide onto the grass). I can only apologies for the wiggle but I don't feel the overtake was too aggressive and I was consciously trying to leave room for you (perhaps if I'd been a bit more aggressive and shut the door, you wouldn't have had any chance to pull alongside). Unfortunately such incidents are part of racing - but never less I'm really sorry to have been the cause of your misfortune.

My own race was OK and while I qualified only 12th, I managed to crawl my way up to 5th before f la raspa spun in-front of me around lap 38 (ish) and I had to slowly drive back to the pits for repair and watched as my decent fifth dwindled to an acceptable eighth. With Juan's third place Vulture Racing is showing joint forth which is very nice indeed.
